I love using personal work to try and push forward, explore new directions, and work out new ideas, without the pressure of deadlines. I use it to target areas I want to improve. Currently I’m working on the piece below. In it, i’m focusing on composition, environment, character and story. Some of those elements, I already do well.
Like characters. It’s something that I love drawing a lot. I’m pretty good with expressions and emotions as well. But i feel sometimes the body language can be more. Same with the environment, and lighting.
I’ve been bouncing this around to my friends, to get feedback, and it’s really helped bring it together. One of the first idea’s was just two guards, and the feedback I got was, not much of a story. Well, it’s not really, just two goblins, not even sure what they are doing, they aren’t even interacting.
So I decided to up the story element, by adding a third goblin, looking back over his shoulder, and the one goblin staring off the edge of the image. In the background, I added a party going on. Now it’s clear that they are on guard duty, while the rest of the goblins whoop it up. One is clearly wishing he was there, one is taking his guard duty very seriously, and one is stuffing his face.
After that, I wanted to get the value’s right, so as to create focus and move the eye around the page. This is where my friends really helped me pull it together.
I haven’t had time to go back and start working on the final. But I also think putting some time between me and it will help when I do return to it.
